LUSCIOUS locks and bushy beards were shaved off charitable Droitwich Spa workers as part of a fundraising drive to get adults with learning difficulties back into their community.

Staff, carers and users of Kingfields Day Service Centre, in Ledwych Road, kicked off the scheme by hosting a coffee morning on Friday.

Two members of staff - Chris Crosby and Keith Dunkley - went for a charity chop when they allowed Ian Shephard, of Mr Harry's Hairdressers, in St Andrew's Square, to shear their hair and beards.

The event raised more than £300 towards the £20,000 target. The money will help the centre's users run a shop in the town's train station, off Ombersley Way.

Staff and users at Kingfields, which is run by Worcestershire County Council, came up with the idea last year and hope to see their dreams come true by January.

Centre manager Sandra Hill said: "We want residents to know what's going on in their area and raise the profile of people with disabilities being part of and making a valuable contribution to their own community."
