DOCTORS have been warned to keep a check on their supply of the flu vaccine after two of their drug suppliers announced they had not manufactured enough.

Redditch Primary Care Group has issued urgent messages to all of the 12 GP surgeries across the town asking them to be on their guard.

The news comes after the launch of a campaign to target every person over the age of 65 to have the free vaccine.

Last year Redditch actually had the highest rate of immunisation across the whole of Worcestershire.

PCG chief officer Sue Jenkins said: "There is already a shortage of vaccine in some areas and I have sent out urgent faxes to all the town doctors.

"Most of the practice managers in each surgery organises their own supplies very well but after two of our drug companies said they had not made enough vaccine, we had to check."

Practice manager for St Stephen's Surgery, Sandra Grigg, said: "We have not had any problem with supplies and have been running clinics throughout October on Saturday and Friday mornings.

"We have administered 900 flu vaccines this year and we hope to administer about 160 on Friday.

"We have had an excellent response so far and we have not had to mail shot anyone yet, but we might do so for the remaining few who have not had a flu vaccine."
