A REDDITCH man who for years has channelled his energy into creating a superb facility for youngsters has been given countywide recognition for his tireless efforts.

Steve Rooke, Redditch Wheel's Project co-ordinator, has worked tirelessly with Redditch Council towards establishing a state-of-the-art skate park.

And Mr Rooke's continued efforts to "put Redditch on the map" are paying off as youngsters from across Great Britain flock to the £110,000 facility.

Mr Rooke recently received a letter from Worcestershire County Council saying he had been selected as one of four "Unsung Heroes" in the county.

The awards are the brainchild of county council chairman Peter Carter and chief executive Rob Sykes and recognise the merits of people in communities across Worcestershire.

A county council spokesman said: "These people are nominated by members of their community for their tireless efforts in helping others.

"Mr Rooke was nominated by someone because of the way he has strived to establish such a fantastic facility for the town's youth.

"He never gave up and did all the work voluntarily."

Mr Rooke said: "I was completely taken aback when I got the letter but I'm thrilled.

"I just carry on doing what I've always done and enjoy doing it but it's absolutely fantastic to get recognition like this."

A Redditch Council spokesman said: "We fully support the award going to Steve. His tireless efforts working with Redditch Council to develop, from nothing, the skate park, resulted in an essential facility for young people.

"Many congratulations from Paul Patten, area director."

On Wednesday, December 20, Mr Rooke and the other winners will be taken by the county council's civic car to a carol service at County Hall and meet the chairman and chief executive at a special reception.
