WITH reference to Robin King's letter (Advertiser, October 18) over the saga of Terry's Field, who is this man? Is he totally ignorant or just naive, or maybe a wind-up merchant?

I happened to be at the neighbourhood group meeting Mr King refers to and on both his reported statements concerning Councillor Beardwood, he was wrong.

He quoted what he thought the councillor had said about the sale of Terry's Field, but it was I, Mr King, who pointed out that the sale was by the New Town Commission and, yes, there was a covenant on the land which was broken, legally, before the sale.

On my correction, the councillor nodded in assent and generally every other statement by Councillor Beardwood was correct, as many of us have known for a number of years.

On the point of Abbeydale's "ring-fenced money" to which Mr King refers as an unsubstantiated rumour, I would make two points.

Firstly, all the information has come from the council over a period of years and no-one has ever denied it.

Didn't he wonder why there were no denials from either councillors or executives at the meeting?

Secondly, he can tootle down to Batchley where he will come across that unsubstantiated rumour - it's called the Batchley Community Centre. This is where Abbeydale's money went.

Lastly, this prudent council he keeps going on about. Is this the same council that fought alongside the residents of the area for just over 2 years in their fight to save Terry's Field and used its resources to fight County Hall, only to sell the land in seven weeks when they gained political control of the county?
