SERIAL killer Rosemary West, who is convicted of murdering a Droitwich Spa teenager, has made a formal bid to clear her name.

Fifteen-year-old Shirley Hubbard, of Ombersley Road, was one of nine victims found at 25 Cromwell Street, in Gloucester.

West is serving a life sentence for the murders but her solicitor, Leo Goatley, has confirmed an application has been submitted to the Birmingham-based Criminal Cases Review Commission.

He said: "I am interested in whether my client had a fair trial. There are many outstanding issues which must be acknowledged."

A previous appeal was rejected in 1996 but Mr Goatley is mounting a new appeal partly because photographs taken of the victims by her husband, Fred, were withheld at the trial at Winchester Crown Court in 1995.

At the time, it was claimed they had been destroyed, which the defence team says prevented them from being used as evidence.

Lawyers also claim that under the new Human Rights Act, the pre-trial news coverage prevented her from getting a fair trial.

Her husband committed suicide at Winston Green Prison, in Birmingham, before he could be brought to trial.

Shirley was last seen on November 14 1974 after she had worked all day at Debenham's store, in Worcester, on a pre-leaving school course.

Born Shirley Lloyd, she was fostered in Droitwich and was a pupil at the town's Westacre Middle School, in Ombersley Way.

In 1972, she wanted to be known as Shirley Louise Hubbard, although her name was never formally changed.
