NO wonder "independent-minded" Brian Hunt comes to quite bizarre conclusions from time to time, most recently concerning our Sabrina Bridge (You Say, Sept 21).
The £397,000 "cost" alleged by Mr Hunt was merely a very early working estimate for a timber bridge that was never a serious or agreed runner; and excluded fees, the Hylton Road crossing, cycle path links and landscaping.
The tender actually accepted by that Labour Council - for a steel A-frame structure - was £463,000 plus £34,000 fees and £12,000 for surveys and other investigations.
The final contracts total ran out at £617,000, an overspend of £58,000 on unforseeable extra construction costs.
These, while unwelcome, are nowhere near the wild and ill-informed "almost a quarter-of-a-million pounds over estimate" tag applied by Mr Hunt. He ought to calm down a bit.
In the meantime, the City's Labour Group will continue to place its trust in fact rather than twisted prejudice. For instance, on any average weekday, around 250 pedestrians and 150 cyclists use Sabrina Bridge. That's 400 citizens and visitors daily obtaining benefit and pleasure from this amenity - many thousands more on special occasions.
