BROMSGROVE triathlete Dave Brearley is celebrating after being selected to represent the Great Britain veterans' team for the World Triathlon Championships in Edmonton, Canada, next July.

The 55-year-old was chosen following his performance at the National Triathlon Championships in Brighton where, along with Rednal's Shaun Davey, he had to complete a 1,500 metre sea swim, a 40km bike race and a 10km run.

It was Shaun's first sea swim and after his first full distance Olympic triathlon, he was pleased with his 2 hour, 24 minute and 18 second time for the three disciplines.

Dave, meanwhile, managed to hang on to the back group of swimmers during his 1,500 metre sea swim before attacking the 25-mile bike race, where he was fastest in the over 55s age group. A strong run gave him second place overall in the race with a time of 2.30.10, some two and a half minutes better than his best.
