THE number of pupils excluded from Worcestershire schools has continued to fall, but not in line with Government targets.

A total of 110 children were excluded in the last school year - a drop of 18 on 1998/9 - the majority of them from secondary schools. Despite the decline, Worcestershire County Council remains adrift of the target set by the Government, aimed at cutting exclusions by a third between 1999 and 2002. The Government was looking for no more than 87 exclusions in the last school year.

Exclusions in the Malvern area actually rose by five to 18, including an increase from four to six at The Chase and from four to seven at Dyson Perrins. Most pupils excluded are boys and the most common reasons are physical assaults on pupils or staff, verbal abuse of staff and uncooperative behaviour.
