THE family of a "bubbly" schoolgirl crash victim are trying to piece together the events leading up to the incident.

Kate Spink, aged 13, is showing signs of gradually pulling herself out of unconsciousness after suffering two skull fractures.

She was walking with friends when she was in an accident with a motorcyclist.

Her older sister, Lucy, said she was hoping other girls at the scene would be able to help her sister remember how the accident happened.

"She has not been able to tell us anything and I understand other people who were around have not given much clue either," said Lucy.

Kate was out with two friends in Kidderminster's Spennells Valley Road at 6pm on Saturday, September 16, when the collision, involving a Halesowen motorcyclist and pillion passenger, occurred. Pedal cyclist Andrew Stock, 32, of Birmingham Road, Kidderminster, was also injured in the incident - and taken to hospital with a suspected fractured back.

In addition to the head injuries, Kate, of Yellowhammer Court, Spennells, has undergone surgery at Birmingham Children's Hospital for a broken collarbone and is being treated for arm and pelvis fractures.

Transferred

Members of her family have been by her bedside since she was taken to Worcester's Ronkswood Hospital, Worcester, in a critical condition. She was later transferred to Birmingham.

Lucy, aged 26, said the girls' mother, Sue ,had been encouraged about Kate's progress as she recognised the colour of her teddy's jacket, had asked for a glass of water and seemed to be aware she was in hospital.

Lucy described her sister, who is in her first term at King Charles I High School, Kidderminster, as "very bubbly and full of life."

"She was very excited to be starting at her new school," she said.

"She was very into singing lessons and joining the choir. She is the sort of girl who has lots of friends."

A Birmingham Children's Hospital spokeswoman described Kate's condition as "stable".

The motorcyclist and pillion passenger were sent home from hospital after treatment.

Police are appealing for any further witnesses to contact them on 01562 820888.
