EXTRA trains will be laid on by the Severn Valley Railway this weekend to make up for the cancellation of its Autumn Steam Gala.

SVR leaders said feedback from guesthouses and hotels suggested up to a third of railway enthusiasts who had booked accommodation for the gala were still expected.

The autumn event was cancelled because of a shortage of locomotives. The company said today that despite not being "out of the woods" it could offer an increased service over the weekend.

"It seems we may be able to salvage something from the gala after all," said marketing manager, John Leach.

"Local accommodation addresses tell us that a good percentage of those who had booked rooms are still coming - so we're making a measured response by putting two extra trains into the normal timetable.

"Our normal Sunday service at this time of year sees four engines in steam, and for some railways that would constitute a gala anyway.

"By putting on the extra trains on Saturday night, we're making a good fist of the resources we have.

"We never cease to be amazed at the loyalty and affection shown to the SVR by enthusiasts and supporters."

Saturday will now see 10 train departures from both Kidderminster and Bridgnorth stations.
