Stephen Billington may not be a name which jumps to the forefront of everyone's mind, but woman-beater, Greg Kelly, from Granada's Coronation Street is sure to jog the memory.

Last year the actor became one of television's most hated men as he played the violent charmer who subjected Sally Webster, played by Sally Whittaker, to a merciless beating.

Yet the actor - who comes to Malvern later this month - said that while being the face of one of the most disliked characters had its disadvantages, he was glad to have played the part.

I got a lot of grief at the time for being Greg," said the 30-year-old pacifist.

That has stopped now, of course. Usually people recognise me but can't think why, as it seems such a long time ago.

But it was very interesting playing the character. He was a real rogue and actually quite disturbed. I learnt a lot doing playing him.

Apart from the fact I look like him I am nothing like him, however the only parts I seem to be offered now are Greg-like characters."

But the actor is very proud of the fact the scene of him beating Sally has been put to good use.

The scenes have been used by the Government for anti-domestic violence campaigns which makes me pleased to have been involved," he added.

Now the actor - who also played a part in the blockbuster film Braveheart with Mel Gibson, as the princess's boyfriend thrown out of a window by the king - is again to show a darker side.

In his latest role he plays Guy Haines in the Craig Warner play Stranger on a Train, in which he plays a man drawn to his darker side through a loveless marriage.

The play is about a man who is not bad but is forced into doing bad things,"

It is a real look at the light and dark side of people. It is a great play, which is brilliantly designed and the lighting and music are great," he added.

I am really proud to be in it. It is a very gripping play and a great show."
