A STATE-of-the-art body scanner has been unveiled at Worcester's Ronkswood Hospital.

More than £400,000 has been invested in the new CT scanner, which enables faster and more complex examinations to be carried out.

Worcester MP Mike Foster joined staff at the opening ceremony of the 'helical' scanner yesterday.

The technology now means that complex 3D reconstructions of various parts of the body can be provided.

"Certain types of examinations, such as vascular scans, which were not possible before will now be performed within Worcester, rather than patients having to go to hospitals further afield," said Dr Umesh Udeshi, consultant radiologist and medical director for Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.

"The faster speed of the scanner also means that certain patients can be scanned without the need for sedation."

Mr Foster said that the new scanner would be invaluable to doctors.

"Local people deserve this investment in the latest diagnostic technology. I welcome its arrival within Worcestershire," he said.
