A SUCCESSFUL Saturday turned into a sorrowful Sunday as Pete Jennings endured more heartache in the British 125cc Champion-ship.

The Offenham racer, aboard the Knotts Motorcycles Honda, finished fourth in final qualifying and he was confident of achieving a first success of a tortuous season.

However, midway round the 1.37 mile circuit at Mallory Park on Sunday, the bike packed up and Jennings was forced to retire after just two laps.

"Luck just isn't on my side," he moaned. "We were all set for a podium finish after a pleasing qualifying session and also after being fastest through the speed trap in Sunday's warm-up."

The problem was identified as an ignition system fault, something which is "being sorted" for this weekend's trip to Brands Hatch.

"I was fifth on the first bend and then the bike just stopped dead," Jennings recalled. "I thought I was going to get round before the ignition cut back in and I got going again.

"It cut out again and I was not lucky to get it, so I pulled off."

It's been one problem after another for the ambitious Jennings, who is determined to end a miserable season on a high.

"I've got two meetings left to prove myself - I am so close," he said. "I want to make people sit up and realise I'm still in there. Results haven't been going for me and thus the results have been low but I can only hope fortune favours me in the last two races and I can get some reward."
