WORCESTERSHIRE disproved the prophets of doom by fielding a successful squad for their first match of the BDOs Inter-Counties championships at home against Oxfordshire.

Match awards went to: B team, ladies, Pam Jones 15.03; men, Tim Green, 25.15. A team, ladies, Carol Jones 16.16; men, Tony Randall 30.94.

The teams hit a total 186 tons, with maximums for Jess Archer, Matt Sheehan, Rob Heming, Simon Webb, Nick Fullwell, Rachael Dixon, Alan Merriman, and Graham Perry. Paul Brookes and Dave Honey hit two each.

The highest check out was 155 by Steve Watton.

The ladies B contained three players making their debut for the county.

The team scored well but had back luck on the doubles resulting in a 2-4 loss. The winners were Pam Jones and a debut win for Kath Jones.

The men's B had three successful newcomers, Wayne Weston, Mark Thomas and Nigel Vernall.

Further wins from Tim Green, Jess Archer, Nick Fullwell, Brian Griffiths and Darren Willetts resulted in an 8-4 win.

This gave Worcestershire a two leg advantage after the first days play.

The ladies A earned a worthy draw with wins for Beaty Powell, Carol Jones and Betty Sinnett.

The men's A opened with wins for Alan Merriman, Mark Bayliss, Paul Millward, Tom White, and Dave Honey.

There was a fine performance of a 12-dart leg from Paul Brookes that ensured a win for the county.

Bonus points were now at stake and the remainder of the team kept the pressure on Oxfordshire.

Wins from Tony Randall, Jess Archer, Mick Hill and Steve Watton gave Worcestershire a resounding 23-13 victory.

Individuals can still join the Super-League even if they do not wish to play county darts.
