MALVERN Town have been docked one point in the Banks's Brewery League Premier Division for fielding an ineligible player.

The league found that Martin Phillpotts had not been properly signed on before their recent match with Tividale.

Malvern were convinced that Phillpotts had signed, but when it became apparent that he had not, the club got Tividale to endorse a signing-on form on the day of the game.

But the league ruled that while Town had not set out to mislead anyone, the correct procedures were not followed and imposed a point penalty and £75 fine.

Malvern's assistant manager Richard Anson said: "I think the point reduction was a bit harsh as by naming Martin in the team proved that we were not trying to decieve anyone, but I guess it is difficult for the League and they cannot afford to set precedents.

"But we all do this in what remains of our spare time and I think there is a definite difference between an innocent mistake and someone deliberately fielding an ineligible player."
