A STOURPORT apprentice has proved he is laying the foundation for a solid career in construction by earning an apprentice of the year title.

Shane Jones, 18, from Crossway Green, is in the second year of learning his trade as a bricklayer with Wyre Forest Community Housing.

He is one of 12 apprentices being trained across the whole range of building crafts with the company, comprised of council and private tenant representation, to which Wyre Forest District Council sold its housing stock.

Former Stourport High School pupil Shane was judged the pick of the apprentices, earning £50 in vouchers to be spent on tools of his trade.

He earned the award for showing the greatest progress over the past year.

It was presented by Chris Lewis, chairman of the company's board, who said: "Wyre Forest Community Housing is committed to the provision of high quality, local housing services by enthusiastic and skilled local people. This award is a recognition of the great strides taken since the formation of the company."
