THE CLOSURE of Evesham Post Office came under fire at the Liberal Democrat conference at Bournemouth.

Speaking at a meeting organised by the Post Office on Tuesday, Robert Browne, prospective Lib Dem Parliamentary candidate for Evesham, told of the anger of Vale people at the arbitrary decision of Post Office Counters to get rid of the staff, re-locate at the Co-op, threatening a whole High Street area with economic dereliction.

Furious that the Post Office relocation was for money-saving reasons, Mr Browne said: "I wrote to PO Counters seeking a compromise whereby the community could compensate the Post Office for any profit differential. It was obvious that minds were made up long ago.."

He added: "Consultation is a complete joke. I hate hypocrisy wherever I find it, and when it is coming from a public body it must be stopped."

He backed staff and residents in any action that could be taken within the law, but stressed: "I don't want any of William Hague's 'decent upstanding citizens' blockading our High Street however."
