ALVECHURCH stormed to a thrilling win against tenants Kings Heath with a double from Dean Meyrick and other goals from Paul Court and Andy Hicks.

Yet it looked odds on three points for the home side before they squandered a two-goal lead in the final 20 minutes.

Although Alvechurch had looked more dangerous in the early stages, Kings Heath took the lead with a smart strike from Peter Bennett that gave his side a 27th minute lead. Alvechurch came close to replying but not close enough, with Meyrick and Hicks both shooting wide and Dainter and Simpson putting free kick efforts over.

When Kings Heath doubled their lead on 59 minutes it looked over. Dave Sheward tapped in from close range following a goalmouth scramble.

The turning point came some 15 minutes later. Firstly, a smart move involving Matt Davis, surging from the back, and Paul Court, finished with Court lunging in to direct the ball through a pack of players past the unsighted Sanders.

An incident involving Michael Campbell and Vincent Rattray saw the latter receive a red card for a head butt. This seemed to signal a self-destruct command for Kings Heath, as the Alvechurch chances began to rain in.

Scenting that a result was possible, Alvechurch laid siege to the Kings Heath goal. Court crossed for Campbell to head against the bar and a series of corners kept the pressure on. The breakthrough came with six minutes of normal time remaining. A typical Campbell surge into the area forced Sanders into a save - Meyrick pounced to poach the equaliser and Kings Heath were rocking.

Andy Hicks had a goal disallowed but was to gain revenge in the last minute to add number four after Meyrick had helped himself to his second of the game by flicking the ball past Sanders after Dainter and Powell had carved out the opening. Meyrick's 88th minute goal was inevitably greeted with chants of "Deano is back" - it is hoped he truly is.

Andy Hicks' headed goal from another corner was the fitting climax to a remarkable comeback and builds upon the previous week's win at Coventry Sphinx.
