A MATURE student at NEW College has proved language barriers need not stand in the way of a chosen career, after becoming one of only five people to be awarded a prestigious national Learning Works Award.

Sanara Choudhury, 39, of Batchley, had always wanted to be a social worker, but because English was not her first language, she lacked the confidence to pursue her goal.

But after encouragement from a friend and strong support from her family she approached NEW College.

Over the last few years while studying at the college, Mrs Choudhury has gained a long list of qualifications, including a First Certificate in English, a City and Guilds Numeracy Certificate, GCSEs and most recently, the Access to Social Care certificate.

In September, Mrs Choudhury begins her diploma in social work and on completion she will be a fully qualified social worker.

The award she has received was organised by a national organisation for adult learning and was presented by playwright Willy Russell last Friday at the Millennium Dome.

The awards recognise and promote the value of learning in relation to the workplace and employment opportunities. Only five winners were selected from hundreds of nominations across the country.

Commenting on her achievements, Mrs Choudhury said: "The benefits I have seen are countless. I now have a sense of independence and I am empowered, literate and confident.

"Prior to my training and study I wasn't able to speak for myself. Now I feel I have earned the respect of my children and will become a positive role model for them."

Tutor Donnah Morgan who nominated the star student said: "Sanara is an example to us all as adult learners.

"She has shown through hard work and perseverance we can all realise our aspirations."
