"SOCIAL Services spending is spiralling out of control" (Evening News, Friday, September 8) and "it can cost as much as £100,000 a year (£1,923 per week) to care for one child"! How is this nonsense justified?

The obverse of this carefree approach to public funds is when it is applied to the elderly and their relegation to the back of all queues for both healthcare and subsistence.

This is exemplified by New Labour's Lord Falconer (of Dome fame) who recently assured one lady pensioner that he could "probably" manage on her total income of £93 a week!
