MATHON, Cradley & Storridge Tennis Club held their club championship finals inglorious weather last Saturday on their newly repainted courts.

There was always going to be a new name on the ladies singles cup as seven times past winner Sonja Sanderson had decided to retire from singles play. The final was between Amanda Godsland and Jean Roberts with Amanda coming through to win in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 ad thus record her first singles title.

In the men's singles Dean Gibbard played Mark Kavanagh. A very tight first set eventually went to mark 6-4 and he went on to take the second set 6-0 with Dean being hampered by his knee injury which has kept him out of league tennis for the last 12 months.

The ladies doubles was between Christine Brandon-White & Jean Roberts and Janet Brown & Carol Dandy. Chris & Jean played a very disciplined and tight game to take the title in straight sets 6-2, 6-4.

The men's doubles proved to be a rather one sided final with Peter Flagg & Mark Kavanagh defeating Steve Meredith & Barry Roberts 6-0, 6-1 in very quick time.

The mixed doubles proved to be the closest match of the day when Sonja Sanderson & Mark Kavanagh took on Jean Roberts & Dean Gibbard. Sonja & Mark took a tight first set 6-4 and then Jean & Dean raced to a 4-0 lead in the second set before Sonja & Mark fought their way back to take the second set 7-5. Mark Kavanagh in his first season with the club thus became the first man to take all three titles in one season.

The Club would like to thank all those members who came down and helped with the umpiring and line judging and who made the day such a success.

The winter league season starts on October 1 and the club is looking forward to further success on the court following their summer league titles.
