I REFER to R A Moore's "Park-and-ride fine idea" letter. Perhaps R A Moore will explain how spending £15m of public money on park-and-ride and incurring projected annual losses of almost £1m, can be described as a good idea.
Especially when our councils don't have sufficient money to provide decent standards of social service care for our elderly.
Even our council's own figures put the "take-up" for park-and-ride at just 1,403 users. Is it really sensible and cost- effective to spend £15m, and incur annual losses of almost £1m, just to remove that number of motorists from our city's roads, which have 300,000 vehicle movements per day? If anyone believes it is I'd like them to explain their reasoning.
A lot of our money is about to be spent on this lunacy and I have no doubt that more of our money will be demanded next year in council tax. Before my council tax goes up another 50 quid or more, I want the advocates of park-and-ride to justify its expense, and its running costs, in a public forum. To date they have not.
As regards the example of Norwich, we used to be told Oxford had an excellent park-and-ride system. We now know the people of Oxford are up in arms about it.
