A PROJECT aimed at improving the health of local people by organising conservation work is being officially launched in Malvern.

Mayor David Williams is among the guests expected at the launch, at the Malvern Theatres today (Friday).

The 'Green Gym' scheme is being supported by Worcestershire Health Authority and the Malvern Hills Primary Care Group.

Health Promotion officer Meryl Johnson said the aim was to bring a representative from the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers in to help organise volunteering opportunities.

"The project is designed to give people the opportunity to improve their physical fitness while perhaps more importantly today, improving their mental well being," she said.

"Practical conservation activities such as planting hedges, creating wildlife gardens and improving footpaths can be achieved in any area designated for improvement.

"This project is open to all age groups and abilities and can be the first step for those who may have been inactive or isolated for some time."

The initial hurdle is funding and today's launch will involve talking to potential partners, such as the Malvern Hills Conservators, Malvern Hills District Council and Malvern Town Council.
