MALVERN Hills District Council was thrown into chaos this week when its switchboard broke down.

Members of the public could not reach council officers with queries on planning, environmental health, benefits and other important matters.

The switchboard crashed about noon on Tuesday (September 12). Repairs were delayed after Telecom engineers had difficulty getting out because of the fuel crisis.

Phone lines between separate council offices were affected and officers were reduced to communicating by e-mail and mobile phones.

MHDC put out messages on local radio stations to warn people about the problem.
