A DRUNKEN Worcester man, arrested for exposing his backside, injured a policeman in the scuffle that followed, a court heard.

Matthew Salter, aged 22, admitted assaulting PC Neil Manson causing actual bodily harm following the incident in the early hours of Thursday, August 24.

He also admitted being drunk and disorderly.

Kerry Moreton, prosecuting, told how Salter and two friends had been swearing and behaving aggressively in Angel Street. Police approached them to ask them to behave.

"The defendant in particular was quite loud and swearing when spoken to," she said.

"Then outside the Subway restaurant he dropped his trousers, exposing his bottom."

She said Salter, of Walnut Avenue, Brickfields, was then put into a police van and taken to Worcester police station, but his behaviour was aggressive.

"He continued to swear at the officers and issue threats."

She said the officers were wary about his actions and when they reached the station three of them stood at the back of the van. Salter then lunged forward with his head hitting PC Manson in the stomach.

She said the PC hit his head on the ground outside the van as the fight continued.

"Officers then handcuffed and subdued him."

PC Manson needed treatment at Ronkswood Hospital for minor injuries, including a cut to the forehead.

Miss Moreton said that during an interview Salter admitted he had been drunk and had behaved aggressively.

"He said he had panicked at the police station and had thought it would be a good idea to try to escape," Miss Moreton added.

Charles Hamer, defending, said his client had only one conviction relating to five years ago.

He asked that pre-sentence reports be prepared by the probation service - a request agreed by magistrates.

The case was adjourned until Tuesday, October 17.
