WORCESTER'S first ever road race, due to take place this Sunday, has been postponed because of the continued uncertainty surrounding the fuel crisis.

Worcester City Council, which has organised the race, made the decision yesterday afternoon after suppliers said they could not guarantee delivery of essential equipment on the day.

"It's with real disappointment that we've decided to postpone the road race," said Wynne Rogers, assistant head of cultural services.

"It's attracted a great deal of competitors, support and interest.

"However, in the light of the current fuel crisis, we've decided that it would be better for all concerned to postpone it.

"Essential equipment required for the day, as well as the back-up of a medical service, couldn't be guaranteed. Without these vital components we felt we couldn't go ahead with the event.

"A new date is being finalised and will be communicated to all involved as soon as it is confirmed."

Two thousand runners were due to arrive in Worcester for the event, which would have included a 10km road race, a 3km fun run, and a 5km wheelchair race.

Race organiser Amanda Smith said the major sponsor, Johnsons of Worcester, was still committed to supporting the event, the proceeds from which are to go to the Leukaemia Care Society.
