EMPLOYEES at a new £32m state-of-the-art dairy in Droitwich will have a recognised trade union.

Robert Wiseman Dairies, which plans to create around 500 jobs when the dairy opens at the Stonebridge Cross Business Park next spring, has entered a nationwide agreement with the Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers.

"We still consider ourselves to be a family business, albeit one that has grown rapidly over the years," said operations director David Dobbins.

"Our decision to move towards this partnership agreement with USDAW will enhance the culture within Wiseman Dairies and reflects modern employment practice.

"We believe this is a sensible move for us as we seek to move forward in further expanding our business."

"Since the 1990s, USDAW has been at the forefront of developing partnership agreements within the private sector," said USDAW Deputy Secretary General John Hannett.

"We welcome this opportunity to give independent and professional representation to Robert Wiseman Dairies employees and look forward to working together in further promoting good employee relations with staff."

The agreement will also involve staff at milk-processing plants in Aberdeen, Glasgow and Manchester and distribution depots from Keith in the north to Wolverhampton in the south.
