A PERSHORE man's vintage motorbike saw off competition from around the world to win a trophy at a major show.

Terry Richardson, of Woodward Road, entered his 1929 Ariel 500 in the original bike category at the recent Great Dorset Steam Fair and won his first ever trophy.

A delighted Terry, aged 33, said he was really surprised as the show, which attracts contestants from around the world, is one of the biggest of its kind.

"There were people there from New Zealand, the USA, Germany, France and Holland," he said.

"They're very choosy about what they have down there and out of 145 bikes I won the trophy."

The bike has been in the loving care of Terry's family since his father bought it from a man in Sedgeberrow 33 years ago and all the parts, which still work, are original.

"I just wipe it down with an oily rag, there's nothing new on it," explained Terry.

"They said at the show that they saw so many restored bikes but to see one this original was very unusual."

Terry is a lifelong enthusiast of vintage machines and is the proud owner of 16 others motorbikes plus a Morris Eight car and several stationary engines.
