A SOUTH Warwickshire county councillor who wants to see a reduction in accidents along the A46 is urging the area's parishes to write to the Highways Agency.

Councillor Brian Slaughter recently told Bidford Parish Council that it was time to act following three recent accidents along the road, of which one was fatal.

He said measures to slow speeding traffic were needed as soon as possible.

Urging the parish council to join his letter-writing campaign, coun Slaughter said: "I've written two letters to the Highways Agency and Welford Parish Council has also written."

He said the Highways Agency had indicated a willingness to look at ways of improving the road in conjunction with Warwickshire County Council.

In July the agency announced it was bringing forward a safety study on the A46 after complaints from motorists in villages such as Salford Priors about the speed of traffic.

Last week Highways Agency area manager Richard Wilson said they were aware of recent accidents along a particular stretch of the A46 between Stratford and Alcester.

He said they had asked their agents to liaise with police to see if the accidents followed a pattern that might help to identify the appropriate safety measures.

Mr Wilson added: "In the longer term the Highways Agency will be producing a route management strategy for the whole of the A46 through Worcestershire and Warwickshire and the comprehensive study will take into account motorists, cyclists, horse riders and pedestrians."

He said the study would also involve consultation with residents, road users, police, councils, transport operators and other interested bodies.
