A NEW flood warning system has received a guarded welcome from Bewdley victims.

But praise for the Environment Agency initiative launched this week was watered down by comments that more could be done.

Memories of the unexpected River Severn flood in October and December 1998 and February 1999 after 30 "dry" years have put riverside residents on the alert.

As the revamped warning scheme was unveiled a newly formed Bewdley Town Council river watch committee prepared for its first full meeting to consider a response and discuss winter contingency plans.

Meanwhile town council representative and Severnside North resident Louise Edginton said of the Environment Agency Flood Action Week: "I think the advice has improved compared with before and covers all contingencies.

"But we have been disappointed we drew a blank with the agency when we asked for pumps which can be effective when the floodwater is at a low level.

"There has also been no survey of our houses to establish whether our homes could be modified to reduce damage by flooding.

"I think they have done well but could do better."

The agency's new flood warning system replacing the old colour-coded scheme is backed by a telephone information service.

Claiming that only one person in 20 takes any steps to prepare for flooding the agency suggests a range of actions such as taking out adequate insurance, protecting vital documents and turning off gas and electricity if a warning is out.

Other advice includes moving people, pets, valuables and cars to higher ground, check neighbours can manage and do as much in daylight as possible in case electricity failed

Chairman of the town council committee Bill Mason said: " I think the advice is better than it was before. We are told how we can prepare for flooding so I welcome the change.

"I think we were unlucky in 1998 when we had three floods in one year but we will be getting together for our first meeting now when the new scheme will be discussed."

The agency has also announced plans to test the ground at Severnside North next month to establish whether flood defences are appropriate.
