THE family of an 87-year-old woman have spoken of her "extreme distress" after a distraction burglary in which she was robbed of her savings.

The Kidderminster pensioner fell victim to a couple aged about 30 who gained access to her home at Greenhill by preying on her love of gardening.

The case last Thursday afternoon, followed only days later by another in Elliot Walk, Kidderminster, is among a number that have prompted police to launch a campaign with Wyre Forest District Council and other agencies.

In the second incident, believed to be unconnected, a couple escaped with £200 from a house after the female partner claimed to be a police officer.

The son of the Greenhill victim described his mother as suffering great shock not just because of the money taken but because of anger at what she felt was her stupidity.

After being confused by the caller because of deafness and poor sight, she led the woman through her house into the back garden. The male companion then stole a wallet and cash tin.

Her son said: "She was very distressed and would not leave the house for two days. A doctor had to prescribe medication."

"This woman touched a soft spot which is her garden. She has lived there 31 years and after this she just sat in a chair staring into space. She was recovering from an eye operation."

Scene Investigator PC Frank Concannon said: "We are aware of recent events and in the process of getting other agencies involved."

He emphasised that incidents, which usually occurred in spates in summer, are not common and should not cause alarm. The police campaign will underline the message to check on the identity of callers.
