I REFER to your report (Journal, August 31) on the dangerous bends on Fish Hill, Broadway.

Without the full facts of the tragedy you report I cannot of course comment on this particular case, but the county council must seriously look at the several bends on the A44 (Fish Hill) and they cannot shirk their responsibility.

As an old Broadway resident I have knowledge of many accidents over the past seventy years. With that knowledge, in my statement to the public inquiry into the proposed by-pass in December 1994 I said: "It is noted that the notoriously dangerous "S" bend on Fish Hill (A44) has not been eliminated by the proposed new road. Had Option 4 been adopted this could have been more easily dealt with...."

If the by-pass had to be built, at a cost of many millions, then this was a golden opportunity to eliminate most of the Fish Hill dangers. This was not done and I fear the county council's suggestion of yet more signs will do little to remove hazards which were already known to them.
