PLAYERS in Stourport Cricket Club's youth squads will be able to face fast bowlers and leg spinners in safety in the future, thanks to a £100 community grant from West Midlands Co-op.
The club, which is based at Walshes Meadow, Stourport, is spending the money on protective headgear for the under-10 and under-13 teams.
Club secretary Roy Cook said: "It is now a legal requirement for clubs to provide their junior players with the correct safety equipment - helmets, pads and so on - so this donation came just at the right time.
"This is the first season for a number of years when the club has had the resources to run a youth team and with support from organisations such as the Co-op we can continue to improve our facilities, hopefully encouraging more youngsters to play the game."
Stourport has 70 senior and junior members, who are now hoping to raise funds for a new perimeter security fence.
