IT was a big relief to finally get a home win under our belts against Moor Green on Saturday.

I don't think going so long without a victory at home has been a burden to us mentally, because I don't think we have probably deserved too much from our recent home performances.

We have had some decent performances at St George's Lane like the Boston game last season and against Bath recently, but there haven't been enough games where we have been good enough to win.

We also haven't had good fortune in and around the areas that matter. Even though it was a late goal, I thought we still deserved to win the game on Saturday.

The quality of play from both sides was poor, to be honest.

It was more a result than a performance we were looking for, but when things come together and players are ready and champing at the bit, hopefully we can get the performances to go with the results.

The win takes us up to eighth place with an average of 1.5 points per game. It is not a great start but measured against the circumstances we have had to achieve them with, I am not too unhappy with it.

We have also taken seven points out of the last nine. Whether it is a measure of the league or not I am not sure, but there is definitely more to come from us. Getting points when you think you can still do better isn't a bad omen.

Another pleasing aspect was keeping a clean sheet after our recent defensive problems.

There has been a bit of talking to certain individuals, and we did do a bit better.

Mark Tucker had his best game so far and looked more like his old self, and there should be a bit more to come from him as well.

Also, for the first time on Saturday we made a couple of defensive errors but didn't get punished for them.

I don't think any league takes full shape until 10 or 12 games have been played, then you may have some indication as to what the season holds for you.

We are only eight points behind at this stage and there is no doubt that the league is going to be tight.

It may be that the three currently at the top of the league may carry the charge and continue it for a long while.

I don't know too much about Welling, but their results show they are determined to try and get back into the Conference at the first attempt.

I was quite impressed by Crawley at the end of last season, and Burton are still my favourites to win it and have got good depth to their squad.

We now have two away games at Cambridge and Bath, which everybody would say are tough.

Cambridge are having a decent season up to now and hoping they can maintain their early form.

Bath are always tough to beat but they have conceded more goals than I would have expected so far. Having said that, the form book in a lot of these games goes out of the window.
