THE organiser of a charity fun run is appealing for the people of Worcester to rally to the cause after fears numbers will be hit by the petrol crisis.

Eve Martin is holding a half marathon and fun run for the Leukaemia Care Society this Sunday.

She was expecting around 2,000 runners to flock to the Worcester event but is worried people intending to travel to take part may not be able to.

"We need the people of Worcester who are easily within reach to come along and boost numbers," said Mrs Martin, Leukaemia Care network operations manager.

"It would be a terrible shame if this petrol problem stopped people getting along to a very worthwhile event."

St John's youngster Hannah Jones, who suffers from acute myeloid leukaemia, is endorsing the event and will be present on the day.

The fun run starts from the Guildhall and goes around the city centre and the half marathon also includes the Pitchcroft race course.

All proceeds will go towards setting up a freephone number for sufferers in Worcestershire.

Anyone interested in taking part can ring the Leukaemia Care Centre in Shrubbery Avenue on 01905 330003 or Worcester City council, which is backing the event, on 01905 722323.
