GLENN McGrath is determined to sign off his first County Championship campaign by helping Worcestershire clinch promotion to the First Division.

And the Australian pace star is convinced the County will have booked their place in the top flight at the end of their make-or-break clash with champions Northamptonshire which opens at New Road tomorrow.

Worcestershire go into the match six points adrift but McGrath said: "We want to get into the First Division and I think we can beat Northants.

"We started off the summer well and were winning tight games because we were playing with a lot of confidence. Now, when we are in the same position, we are losing because the confidence is down.

"We have to hope that a win will be enough to get us promoted. I want to finish on a high for the boys and get them up."

New Road coach Bill Athey said today: "It's all to play for. If we play well and it goes for us then all sorts of things can happen.

"We have just got to keep going right to the end."

With Northants having sealed the title, the other two promotion spots are currently occupied by Glamorgan and Essex.

The County are fifth behind Nottinghamshire but any side in the top seven can still go up.

The County will again be without England's centrally contracted Graeme Hick while the pace pairing of Kabir Ali and Duncan Catterall are ruled out because both have stress fractures of the back.

Worcestershire lost by an innings and 72 runs when they visited Northamptonshire last month.

Play will start at 10.30am on each of the four days.

Worcs: Wilson, Pollard, Solanki, Leatherdale, Driver, Pipe, Rhodes (capt), Lampitt, Rawnsley, Liptrot, McGrath.
