CLASHES between Stratford's taxi drivers and the district council continued this week.

Last week the drivers were outraged when they received letters which they say appeared to accuse them of using their vehicles for indecent acts with the opposite sex.

Now, because the police have not found any evidence to support the allegations, the drivers are demanding an apology from Stratford District Council.

The council, on the other hand, remains unrepentant.

In fact it has hit out at the verbal abuse it claims has been heaped upon its licensing officers.

Press officer, Mark Lepkowski said: "Letters went out to all drivers simply to let them know about the complaints and accusations - we did not know who may be involved so thought it best to warn everyone.

"However, we feel the reaction we received has been totally unjustified.

"Our licensing staff have been abused in the streets and on the telephone."

Chairman of Stratford-Upon-Avon Taxi Owners and Drivers Association, Craig Bennett demanded: "We want an apology from the council.

"The police have investigated the allegations and are now not proceeding any further unless there is new evidence.

"If anyone had been found to be involved then we would not condone such behaviour, and would call on the offenders to be punished accordingly.

"As no evidence has been found the taxi trade feel their reputation has been tarnished."

Warwickshire police press officer Di Houlder confirmed: "Police have so far found no evidence to substantiate the allegations."
