PUPILS at a Kidderminster school which two years ago was near the bottom of performance league tables have been praised for their excellent SATS results.

Birchen Coppice Middle School headteacher Wendy Taylor said the "hard work and commitment" of staff and children had led to the rapid improvement.

In 1998 the school came 147th out of 149 in the Hereford and Worcester primary school performance tables.

However, last year the school made the third best progress in Worcestershire and this year pupils have again made above-expected improvements in English, maths and science.

Some pupils raised their levels of achievement from below the first level at the end of key stage 1 to level four at key stage 2, twice the expected progress.

Mrs Taylor said: "I think this is a superb achievement.

"While we are very pleased with the progress that the children have made, we believe the results can be further improved.

"We are determined to meet our set targets for 2002."
