LIONS CLUB: The Lions Club of Chipping Norton recently started a new Lionistic year after installing Robin Tranter as president.

At a very successful barbecue evening, outgoing president, John Romer, presented a cheque for £800 to Annette Lawrence for the Lawrence Home Nursing Trust. The money was raised at their annual golf day, which, this year, was held at Rye Hill Golf Club.

A further £800 was presented to Ann Jackson, representing the Muscular Dystrophy Association, and £100 was given for research into IVF at the John Radcliffe Hospital.

Mr Romer said how much he had enjoyed his year in office, during which time the club had donated funds to the Orissa Appeal and the Turkish Earthquake appeal.

Mr Romer reminded members of the pleasure given to the senior citizens of Chipping Norton and surrounding villages at the Christmas party and thanked fellow Lions for their hard work at the fetes and fairs, in addition to running the golf day and selling the ever-popular annual quiz sheets.

After presenting several awards he handed over the presidential collar to Robin Tranter and wished him a successful year in office.

Mr Tranter thanked him and presented him with an engraved tankard before saying he was looking forward to the first major event during his year in office, a driving day, on September 3 in Chipping Norton.
