SO we are to have a Post Office inside a supermarket. No doubt both parties to the deal see something in it for them: and if two businesses can agree on a profitable deal, why should we complain?

But the Post Office is not just a business. It exists, not just to make profits, but to keep citizens in touch with the processes of civilised government. It pays pensions and allowances and collects car tax, TV licence amounts, fees for passports and so on. These are things that should not be handed over to the manager of a supermarket.

The deal will make life more difficult for many who come into Evesham by bus; it disregards the rights of those who work in the Post Office; and it offends against the dignity of those who use the services which the Post Office provides for all our fellow-citizens.

We deeply resent the proposal.
