A year after Shipston's Sport For Youth Day was wound up because of public apathy, it is being resurrected for a one-off millennium special.

This Sunday will see the London Road home of Shipston Sports Club filled with entertainment and sporting activities.

Renamed the Shipston Sports Millennium Day, the event has a one-off sponsor in Underground Building Supplies of nearby Willington, and sports club chairman Pete Betteridge said it promised to be a great day out.

Attractions include a jazz band, the Coventry City cheerleaders, Kineton Calypso Band, Shipston Line Dancers, dog agility demonstrations, a parachute jump, pony rides, bouncy castle and ball pond.

On the sporting front, youngsters will compete in a sports, including fishing, tennis, short tennis, hockey, football and cricket.

In six years, successful Sport For Youth Days raised £17,200 for town youth organisations. The last was in 1998. However, this weekend's festival is not a fund-raiser and entry is £1 for adults and nothing for OAPs and children. It will open at 2pm.

Mr Betteridge said that the Sport For Youth kitty still contained about £2,000 and the committee wants town youth groups to apply for a share of the cash.
