A RETIRED Bromsgrove painter and decorator died after he was found lying beneath his son's porch where he had been working, an inquest heard.

Douglas Rea, aged 71, of Durham Close, Sidemoor, was found by his daughter-in-law on the ground beneath the porch where he had been rubbing down paintwork on July 19.

At an inquest in Stourbridge on Tuesday, Worcestershire coroner Victor Round said Gillian Rea was ironing at her home in Willow Close when she heard a bump.

She went upstairs to the front bedroom and she could see the stepladder in place but noticed her father-in-law's legs on the ground.

She called an ambulance and Mr Rea was taken to the Alexandra Hospital, Redditch.

After a CT scan, it was found he had an extensive head injury and fractured ribs.

Mr Rea remained unconscious until he died on Friday July 28.

The cause of death was a massive haemorrhage because of head injuries and multiple rib fractures. A verdict of accidental death was recorded.
