TWO hospitals used by Bromsgrove residents are to get a share of a £3.5m grant to spruce themselves up.

The cash award, announced on Monday, is the region's share of a £31m allocation to clean and redecorate NHS hospitals throughout England.

The Princess of Wales Community Hospital (PoW), in Bromsgrove, and the Alexandra Hospital, in Redditch, are set to benefit from the National Health Service's Hospital Clean-up initiative.

The two trusts involved, the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust (WAH NHS Trust) which runs the Alex and Worcestershire Community and Mental Health NHS Trust (WCMH NHS Trust) responsible for the PoW will each receive £150,000.

Making the announcement health minister Lord Hunt said: "Patients expect tidy wards and corridors, smart entrances, clean furniture and flooring and better decor.

"Patients have a right to receive treatment and recover in clean, comfortable surroundings."

Welcoming the news, the chairman of the WAH NHS Trust, Harold Musgrove, said "This money will help us continue the work already under way, not just to improve tidiness and cleanliness but also the standard of facilities people expect when they visit for their care.

"An example of this is the major refurbishment of the outpatients' department at the Alex which began in July and, of course, the upgrading of wards and the main entrance to the hospital which is already complete."

The chief executive of the WCMH NHS Trust, Sue Hunt, said she planned to get comments from service users on how to best spend the money to help staff improve the environment for patients."
