I WRITE in support of Susan Coombs RGN (You Say, July 20). Incensed is too mild a word to describe my feelings about Councillor Colin Beardwood.

Has he, I wonder, any elderly frail relative just waiting in their twilight years to end this misery? We seem to be turning back the clock to more than 70 years ago when there was no National Health Service.

It's like going back to the days of neighbour's remedies, goose grease and so on, the unemployment of the 1930s, followed by the Second World War.

Many of us started working like slaves at 13 years old and later took on three jobs a week at keep a roof over our heads while our husbands were fighting in Tobruk or in Europe.

Now there are drastic cuts in every possible thing. I'm just lucky to be mentally all right, but need a little care and help to walk more than few yards. One just wonders if the Government or these councillors have any idea of who helped keep out flag flying.

One is quite prepared even to sell our tiny houses, pay for food and accommodation but surely a bit of help and care for the frail should be freely available. In my 90s and labelled as too independent, I now feel like Susan Coombes - dumbstruck by the brass remarks that are being made.

Why should a lifetime of hard work leave us in such dire need with everything cut to the bone?

I'm quite sure Coun Beardwood and Co will not suffer likewise. Stay in your home and we'll give you help says the Government. What with? Cuts for the elderly!
