TWO brothers who brought terror to a group of four Kosovan refugees have both been given custodial sentences.

Daniel Evans disapproved of the way the men were talking to women inside The Works pub in Redditch.

He told them they were not welcome in the town, punched one man and followed the group to the bus station.

When word got out that he was in trouble, his brother Nathan armed himself with a metal belt and struck one man on the head, causing a cut which needed three stitches, prosecutor Robin Lewis told Worcester Crown Court.

Daniel Evans, 21, of Lock Close, Redditch, and 20-year-old Nathan Evans, of Underhill Close, Redditch, pleaded guilty to affray.

The elder brother was jailed for 15 months and the younger was sentenced to 12 months youth custody.

Judge Michael Mott told Daniel he had played on the fact that the men were from another country and had given them unpleasant abuse.

He said Nathan joined in with his considerable bulk and a nasty weapon.

Trouble broke out in the pub on June 17 last year as Daniel confronted the three Kosovans, said Mr Lewis.

At the bus station, accompanied by a pal, he yelled: "We are going to have you."

One Kosovan armed himself with a stick in fear, said Mr Lewis, before a message got to Nathan at a takeaway that his brother was under attack.

He "weighed in" by striking out with the belt. A second victim who suffered head injuries was kept in hospital overnight for observation.

Daniel denied he was racially motivated when questioned by police. He had previous convictions for violence and is currently serving a 30-month sentence.

His barrister, Kevin Hegarty, said he had drunk too much and had acted after a misunderstanding. He suffered from epilepsy and had a heart pacemaker.

Tony Fryer, for Nathan, who also had a record for assault, said he believed he was rescuing his brother.

But Judge Mott said the Kosovans posed no threat to anyone. It was "no wonder" one grabbed a stick for protection, he added.

The judge ordered Daniel's sentence to run consecutively with the prison term he is serving at present.
