WYRE Forest District Council leader Mike Oborski, left, caught senior officers on the hop by announcing last week he was going to take a pay cut.

That's right - a 50 per cent reduction in the £10,000 package to which he was entitled.

He made the statement without consulting chief officers, who were surprised when the Evening News rang to confirm the story.

"Now that I'm leader I can do that sort of thing," said a nonchalant Coun Oborski.

He is also a Worcestershire county councillor and has defied other members at County Hall to follow his example.

Surely we can expect county councillors to respond to the Liberal councillor's challenge, in order to avoid accusations of fat-cattery?
