VANDALS who torched a pile of newspapers have left a Droitwich social club counting the cost of a burned-out shed.

An investigation has been launched after the blaze gutted the outbuilding at the Royal British Legion Club in Salwarpe Road.

Police believe the fire was started overnight on Saturday.

The cost of the damage has not been revealed.

"It appears that someone had set fire to newspapers stacked up outside the fire doors to the side of the premises," said Sgt Peter Hughes, of Worcester police.

"The fire then spread, causing extensive damage to the wooden shed to the side of the building, completely destroying it.

One committee member said the blaze was the first to hit the club.

"We're very angry," he said. "We're trying to tidy the club up, we've decorated inside, and then someone comes and sets fire to our shed. It's not on."

Anyone with information is urged to contact Worcester police on 01905 723888 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
