TWO Malvern mountain bikers are off early next week to compete at the European Mountain Bike Champion-ships at Vars in the Southern French Alps.

Both Martyn Reeley, of Upper Welland, and Mark Wesley from Welland, will be competing in downhill - a renowned extreme side of mountain biking which culminates in a single timed run dropping anything up to 1,500 feet, usually in around four minutes, down set mountain tracks full of natural obstacles and ups.

Their bikes have around 8 inches of suspension front and rear and cost around £4,000 being strong and lightweight. Clothing includes full face helmets and body armour for any little mishap that may occur.

Both race nationally in the Masters Category (30-40 year olds) with Martyn leading the National Point Series after three rounds and Mark making a very creditable 16th at the last National in Wales.

Mark is making his international debut while Martyn has raced in the Czech Republic and World Championships in Canada finishing ninth in 1988.

The two friends are fired up for good results and would like to say thank you to MyCycles, Rapid Orange Hand Cleaner, Smith Eyewear and Mountain Cycle.
