THERE was a splendid service at St James the Great church last Saturday for the re-dedication of the bells.

In 1998 when it was recognised that work would have to be done an application to the Church Bells Lottery Fund was refused. Apparently, there were 200 churches throughout the country all needing support. So, to cut a long story short, an appeal was launched. Many months later, after stupendous efforts to raise money by the appeal Committee arranging all kinds of events and help from all sorts of people, the necessary sum was raised. It was undoubtedly a miraculous achievement. The church was absolutely packed for this special service of thanksgiving. The Rt Rev John Saxbee, Bishop of Ludlow, performed the dedication and gave the address and his usual wit and humour were appreciated by all present. It was very fortunate that we were blessed with a fine, sunny afternoon and the large congregation was able to enjoy the wine and refreshments served on the pleasant lawn outside the church.

Next Sunday, July 23, (the Patronal Feast for St James the Great) there will be no 11am service at Cradley as we will join with Colwall for the Patronal Eucharist. This will start at 10.15am. On the following Sunday, July 30, we are invited by Storridge to go to the open-air service and picnic in the Red House Meadow above Vinesend. Bring your own food and chairs.

Also on Sunday (July 23) don't forget the jazz and pig roast at Church Stile Farm, Cradley; this goes on from 3-9pm and as well as four jazz, swing and rock bands, there will be games for the children, stalls, teas and bar. Come and enjoy yourselves and at the same time support Cradley Village Hall Restoration Fund.
