THE windsurfing Solven brothers from Storridge have been hard at it during the first part of the 2000 season.

Having both changed fleets, from one-design to Formula Windsurf (one short board and a quiver of three sails), their windsurfing has gone from strength to strength.

Racing on TWO national circuits; the United Kingdom Boardsailors Association (UKBSA) and BWA (British Windsurfing Association) the boys have had some very notable results in superb conditions.

UKBSA Grafham in April was their first event in the Formula Class and was a testing ground for kit and technique. Guy came an amazing fifth overall and first youth and Harry was 20th overall.

Over the Easter break, BWA four day event at Marazion was a major event with high winds and huge seas. Here Guy was competing against professionals and World Champions such as Julian Anderson and Jamie Hawkins in the Gold Fleet and gained 14th place overall and third Espoir (under 21). Meanwhile Harry battled it out in the adult Silver fleet to gain 29th place overall and third junior. UKBSA Southsea was a non-event due to lack of wind.

The next BWA event at Brighton over the May Bank Holiday was 'as good as it gets' with wonderful winds and sea conditions with the opportunity to enjoy a variety of disciplines; downwind slalom, figure of eight slalom and course racing with time to wave ride and jump in between.

Guy ended the weekend 14th overall and second Espoir in Gold and Harry was 15th and third Junior in the Silver fleet.

UKBSA Pevensey was blighted with no wind on the Saturday but excellent course conditions on the Sunday. Guy finished eighth overall and third Youth and Harry gained 17th place and third junior.

Hayling Island Marathon in mid-June (a BWA event) again provided choice windsurfing conditions. Guy, starting with Julian Anderson, was clocked leaving the harbour at 28 knots! Guy had an excellent weekend'' racing coming second overall and first Espoir and harry was 15th. Their most recent outing was to the BWA event at Sheerness on July 8/9 where both boys got their best results yet since changing fleets; Guy achieving tenth place overall and third Espoir in the Gold fleet and Harry, in the Silver fleet, came seventh and second Junior.

The boys are only half way through their season and have already made their mark in Formula windsurf. They are waiting to see if they have qualified for grants to the Formula Youth World Championships in Spain in August, and will be working hard to continue their swift rise up through the Gold and Silver fleets.

Not only has Guy been busy on the windsurfing front, he has successfully completed his National Diploma of Graphic Design at Hereford College of Art & Design with a Distinction.

He is continuing his studies with a BA (Hons) in Professional Media at Cheltenham & Gloucester College of Higher Education in September.

Guy is also teaching at Windsurfing Worcester between events.
